  • CHECK IT OR LOOSE IT

    Your 50DN that is.

If your not in the mood to be mechanical today perform this little task anyway.

Put on your surgeons gloves and procede to your series 60 engine doors, (engine OFF of course) open them and find your alternator.

With your right hand reach under the engine casting supporting the alternator and feel around for four bolt heads (reason for the gloves). If you find them be HAPPY! Next take your 3/4″ deep socket and torque wrench and check for tightness.

Sometimes careless mechanics install bolts too short that will over time strip out the casting threads. Sometimes bolts break and some loosen.

Loose and or missing bolts will cause poor tracking of the belt and uneven tension causing premature belt failure.

This litterally just happened to me .. on inspection I found the belt frayed down one side .. and the alternator missing a bolt (!) Good thing there is a true value within a short walk of where I shut down for the night. (and I carry spare belts)

If you’re doing that sort of thing, it might not hurt to check the bolts holding the front and rear of the alternator together…I believe there are 6. I broke one off and lost one on a 6 month old rebuilt 50DN when they vibrated out.
