Engine problems – Pittsburg PA area
Does anyone have experience with Fyda Freightliner/Detroit Diesel in Canonsburg, PA – Pittsburg. We have a diagnosis on #5 cylinder failure. Need to pull the engine, etc, etc, $$$$.

Try calling Tom the service manager at Elite Coach in Ephrata PA.
717-733-1254 He runs a fleet of Prevost’s in the region and knows a lot of the DD shops.
Shame you are not closer to Lancaster. There is a Mennonite run shop that exclusively works on DD engines – saw a 12V92 there – and are very reasonable.
Also, they did my engine frame-on with no issues saving me money.

Thanks Liam. Elite is closed now. Will call in the AM. I’m not sure I want to drive any further and really screw up something. I had to drive 3 hours today blowing smoke to get here.

The only place I would let work on mine is Pittsburgh Power. They are pproably the best shop in the country .

Update:
Fyda Freightliner Pittsburg – DD Dealer- is in the process of removing the engine. Hope to know their findings in a couple of days. We continued by Jeep to Canada to visit family and will head back to Pittsburg in a day or two. Fingers crossed it’s something not too serious.

If the engine is coming out it is already serious and at the very least after it is re-installed verify 100% everything, including house circuits are working.
Are the house batteries being maintained with a charge to them?

Scope Creep
While the engine is out….. it is a good time to replace all the hoses – turbo, cooling system, heater hoses, etc.
A 2006 is getting in the age that soft stuff is getting long in the tooth.
Of course you could have the engine detailed…
Run the top end, valve adjustment, injectors
Add a shiny valve cover
and on, and on and on…..

136,000 on the engine. Techs who took the first look said it’s ‘new’.

I disconnected the house batteries and turned the inverters off until we get back to Pittsburgh … tomorrow. They moved it into the shop when we were in Canada. I didn’t want them screwing with the Marathon drop down sewer/shore power door. I can only plug into 110 in their shop.

I had the same thought about hoses. Gonna pass on the shiny stuff. I’ll wait until they find the problem first. Their ‘estimate’ goes from a cylinder kit to replacing the engine. Have to wait and see.

Kind of scary because at 136,000 it is about 13 or 14% of its life if used in commercial service and is maintained properly.

A broken #5 cylinder piston ring is the culprit. Fyda Freightliner/DD will install a new cylinder kit and new injector. All other components are “like new”.
At their recommendation, since all is in pieces, I’ll have them replace hoses and the starter.
The tech doing the work, Jimmy, has 20 years experience and has been extremely helpful, concerned and a superb communicator. He’s in awe of the Prevost build quality Together we removed the bedroom floor panel and will reinstall it together.
So far so good. I’ll do another update when we’re back on the road. Hopefully at the end of the week.
