I was wondering, for those that have a DEF tank, do you have a problem with the DEF handle at the pump.

I have noticed at many stations that the DEF handle is very finicky. You have to hold the dispenser handle at a very precise point for the DEF to flow.

Some pumps are OK but MOST that I have used keep cutting off so it takes a while to fill a 16 gallon tank.

I don’t have DEF on my bus… But just wondering how often do you have to fill the DEF tank?

. We have a couple of Dodge 5500 trucks on the job that we have had loads of trouble out of their DEF Systems. I am sure they have it figured out in a 2015 Coach. Apples and Oranges I know.

FYI , Did You know that DEF is Water based and will Freeze ? The tanks have Heating elements in Our Dodges , if left sitting for a while in cold weather. Will run down the Batteries.

I fill the diesel at about 1/2 a tank, that puts me filling with DEF at every 4th tank.

It’s not a big deal as the system works fine, no troubles in almost 35,000 miles. It’s just that the DEF handle will constantly cut off unless you hold it perfectly.

Mr. Gonecrazy… generally, we are never in freezing weather so no problem in that regard.

Side note: We do not get a discount on DEF through the Fuel Discount Program (pay at the pump), just on the diesel.

EGR is a headache. DEF is a brain tumor.

This is why I have made a conscious decision to NOT put DEF in our coach. I will NOT defile our coach with DEF. Screw DEF. We operate our coach as a DEF-free coach.

Guys, I just asked a simple question for those that use DEF.

Older coaches don’t require DEF, the newer ones do (no choice).

Have had some trouble with trucks in the past accepting Fuel. Turned out that the filler Tube angle had been compromised by some Mechanics that had to drop the tank to replace fuel pumps. They cut the Rubber filler hose and just re-attached it shorter. Also there should be a tank vent I would think , As with any other tank ? If the vent tube is clogged or kinked in a fuel tank anyway. It is a PIA to try to fill ! You should not have that kind of trouble with a 2015 Coach. You should Ask Prevost about it.

Dick,

Why are you in a tizzy about DEF, your vintage doesn’t need it? Do you think these guys using DEF are doing it just because it has some value? No, they hate, but thanks to our government, their engine won’t run without it.

Actually an engine will do real well without it. In fact an engine will run real well without an EGR system.

For now those are the systems required to meet the current EPA standards for emissions so newer vehicles are going to have them. What is bad about them is the standards have to be met so the engine manufacturers have added these systems to comply and a lot of the issues related to the engines are associated with these add-ons.

Poor choice of words on my part, of course it will run without it, it’s on the exhaust side, but you won’t be going anywhere.
