  • What year did IFS start? Disk brakes? ABS? …

Posted by Steve on July 16, 2020 at 2:38 am

I’m looking at various used coaches. I’m trying to figure out what year various stuff changed.

When was IFS added ? Is it an option or on all coaches after a certain year ?

    Disk brakes ?

    ABS braking ?

    Multiplex wiring ?

    12.7 S60 ?

    14L S60 ?

    Volvo D15 ?

2 piece (versus 4 piece) front windshields ?

round headlights (versus square, prior) ?

cat eye headlights (versus small round ones) ?

curved entrance steps, versus straight entrance steps ?

Do any of these buses come with tilt/telescoping steering wheels ? Should they ?

    Thanks

No matter who answers one of your questions, there may be an exception.

It might be a good idea to start here(LOOK HERE) to get some background.

I’ll answer a few questions, some answers may even be close to correct, maybe not.

Disk brakes ? — My 2000 XLII chassis has disk brakes. They started earlier.

ABS braking ? — My 2000 XLII chassis has ABS braking. They started earlier.

    12.7 S60? — Some late 1994 chassis.

2 piece (versus 4 piece) front windshields ? — I think your question needs to be narrowed down to the “H” chassis or the the “XL” chassis…I think, maybe.

Curved entrance steps, versus straight entrance steps ? — I haven’t seen curved entrance steps…that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. Maybe this is another question that needs to be narrowed down to the “H” chassis or the the “XL” chassis. There are usually 2 short flights of stairs in the “H” chassis. 1 flight of stairs in the XL-XL2 chassis.

Do any of these buses come with tilt/telescoping steering wheels ? Should they ? — My 2000 XLII chassis has tilt/telescoping steering wheel. They started earlier.

There are a lot smarter Prevost historians in the group maybe some of them will fill in some of the details. Start in the link supplied above.

Your mileage may vary, objects in mirror are closer that they appear.

    Best of Luck!

    No expert here either.

My 95 chassis XL is straight front axle.

Bought a trailer from a Liberty XL owner in FL – his coach was a Series 60 and he said it was a 93 chassis. Seemed to know his stuff. Earliest factory installed Series 60 I’ve seen/heard of.

IFS on XL’s started approximately with Vin T-5873, a 1997. Not sure when H’s got IFS, but it appears H’s got more up to date technology first. H 1999 shell had disc all around before XLIIs H’s had double pane windows, XL’s did not, but the later XLIIs did starting with ‘Y” shells. Tenth digit of vin is shell year. Y is for year 2000for XLIIs, X is for 1999, W 1998 and so on in the scheme of vin numbers, the 17 digit system began with model year 1980 the tenth space going from left to right is always the year The early 2000’s used numbers, then in 2010 it went back to letters Like 1980, “A” was for that year. 2010 is also an “A”

An H we were looking at a few months ago was a 1998 Marathon. It had drum on drive axle, disc on steer and tag. One of our previous coaches was a 2000 H Marathon on 1999 chassis had disc all way around

Thanks for sharing that. I just assumed that the drive and tag axle used drum brakes. Apparently later buses used disk brakes on the drive and tag axle as well ?

What was the HP rating of the 12.7 in a 1998 H3-45 ?

What are the engine differences to bring a 1998 up to the power of the later models ?

Would a 1998 coach be multiplex or non multiplex ? What should I prefer ?

What other changes have occurred in these coaches over the years ?

HP was around 470 for a motor home shell.

Multiplex was eased into production on 2006 on slides then total coach 2007.

If the discs were on the steer they were on the tag.

    Thanks

BTW, for DDEC IV 12.7L engines, non EGR and EGR (EPA 2004) max power was 500HP @2100 RPM or 500HP @1800 RPM, 1550ftlbs @ 1350 for both. DDEC iV started 1998.

I haven’t verified what engine model numbers that power level applies to.

DDEC III engines were rated to lower HP. The DDEC IV engines used wastegated turbos and thus could control boost better. DDEC III engines didn’t use wastegated turbos.
