  • Replacing Engine Coolant Drain Cocks

Posted by Chad on October 10, 2020 at 2:06 pm

I’m getting ready to drain my coolant to replace a leaking hose, and have found a drain cock that doesn’t want to drain. I figure “while I’m in there” I’ll proactively replace them all. Are there better options than the style shown below?

A plug is an option. So is a ball valve, but that involves an elbow to keep it from being too low if I recall the height issue.

The only reason I can think for a valve instead of a plug is if you want to drain it down a little, but not all the way. I do not ever recall doing that. I replaced my draincocks with what you show and now I am wondering why.

Jon: shouldn’t we be testing out coolant once in a while?

Chad, IMHO I’am thinking that is a very good idea.

Me too. We’ve had coolant analysis done 5 times in the 7+ yrs that we’ve owned our bus. Here is a link and a pic from July 2020 when we got the latest report.

What does coolant testing got to do with Chad’s question?

I have plenty of coolant to test in my expansion tank and I don’t have to crawl under the rear of the bus to get at it.
