  • Brake caliper rebushing

Posted by Alvie on August 5, 2013 at 11:28 pm

Getting a fairly loud noise when crossing expansion joints. Mostly goes away when braking. Prevost thinks it may be the caliper mounting bushings? Anyone else experienced this? Big job to replace?

I haven’t experienced this, but unlike the previous version of calipers, the Knorr-Bremse that you (and I) have require very heavy torque requirements on the mounting bolts. Unless you know of a service company that specializes in that type of brake I would suggest you have Prevost do the repair.

Before you commit to the repair you might want to go to a truck stop however, remove one of the steer wheels and reach in and shake the caliper to see if it exhibits the looseness in the bushings that would make the type of noise you hear. Are you sure it is not a broken shock mount or missing bushing? When braking the nose “dives” and if it is a shock bushing that might be the issue.

The brakes we have are stout, heavy, and well designed. I cannot imagine the low mileage you are likely to have compared to a seated coach or entertainer coach to have worn the bushings.

Ditto what Jon said, if you have to remove a caliper, only go to Prevost.. Takes serious tools and equipment to get those bolts out and back in with the proper tourgue.

Bill with Prevost said it is a known issue on calipers mounted at the 12 oclock position. This mounting was done for a period before they went back to a 10 oclock mounting. I’ll get a wheel off and see what it looks like. Thanks for the suggestions!
