  • Clutch slave cylinder

Posted by Mike on April 27, 2016 at 1:47 pm

My Hydraulic clutch pedal went out on my 91 XL40. Prevost does not have the parts. I was able to cross reference the number to FORD and replaced the master cylinder. Now the slave cylinder is out. Contacted Ford and they have no way of knowing how to find it. Any ideas on how I can cross reference it to find a new one or rebuild it?

    Thanks guys!!!

I had the same problem with Prevost Relay valves (they said they could get them but had a 180 day back order). Can you carefully clean your part and see if it has a number on it? The reason I say carefully, my Prevost relay valve had a sticker on it with ink that was easily removed with solvent!. Then maybe try Luke at US Coach (856-794-3104), he had the valve on the shelf!

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the answers!! Talked to a mechanic and he says if the slave cylinder is not leaking then I have air in the system. I have my wife pumping the pedal while I bleed the slave cylinder and still nothing at the pedal. By the way never ask your wife to do this for you! Went to auto parts store and got a one man (MityVac) pump and unless I’m doing this wrong I still have air in the line. I realize I’m trying to evacuate air from 35 feet of tubing but geez I have been doing this for at least 10 hours. I did bench bleed the new master cylinder. It seems like the new master cylinder is not working, but it seem to be working good during bench test.

Could the internal seals in the new master cylinder be bad already? Any ideas to check? Thanks!

I must have run 1/2 gal thru mine before I got all the air out. Make sure your slave cyl is sumurged in fluid(hose over bleeder ) run into a glass jar with fluid in it. I think it is a 5/16 wrench that turns the bleeder. That way when you pump there is no way air can be drawn back in. I used the vac pump bleeder also you can see air coming thru clear hose to pump. Make sure your vac gauge on pump has reading before you open bleeder. I’m sure I typed it best of my memory but maybe you can take whats happening and make sence out of my rambling. bob

Thanks Bob, I did that Friday with no results. Today the light bulb in my brain went off and I thought about my younger days of owning my old muscle cars. I decided to pump the pedal and loosen the hose at the master cylinder and BINGO air came out. After a couple times of doing this I now have a firm pedal. Turns out that was where the air lock was at. The old brain gets to wondering in the wrong direction these days! At least I don’t have to replace the slave cylinder for now. Hooray!! Thanks for everyones help!!!
