  • Detroit error codes

Posted by Kevin on July 2, 2013 at 6:53 pm

I got an error code a month ago and promptly called a
Detroit big truck mechanic friend to ask what it was. He said it was no big
deal, just a throttle sensor that was not sending information from the throttle
to the computer. I should however, have it replaced at my next opportunity.

Well, I lost my jake brake a couple times on my way to
Marathon. After looking over my manuals, and finding all wires and connections
good, and then noting the jake came back after turning the bus off and then
back on, I figured the two might be related. No surprise, turns out they were. The part was replaced and all
    is good.

Lesson learned? Continue to remain calm, but definitely
sweat the small stuff. It can become the big stuff in a hurry.

If your throttle position sensor low voltage alarm is raised I’m pretty sure your Jake will not work. If the DDEC is not seeing your foot off the throttle, which it sees as voltage being returned from the TPS, it won’t engage the Jake. I also bet most throttle position failures at the idle (foot off the pedal) position.

You can replace the sensor in about 5 minutes, but be prepared for sticker shock. I can tell you Prevost’s price was about $100 cheaper than what the Detroit shop in Vegas (W.W. Williams) was going to charge me. I did get Williams to discount the TPS, Part Number BW-550389, to $220.79. I should have checked with Prevost first 🙁

My Jake has taken spells where it has quit working in the past. It would begin to work after shutting down the engine as well. After I had the engine cradle replaced in February 2012 it did not do it again, until about two week ago. This time iy came back on after about 30 minutes.

I have not had any error codes but I wonder if my throttle sensor might be going bad?

I have an 87 XL DDEC 1 system. Whenever I turn on the jake switch the check engine light comes on. The light goes out when the accelorator is depressed, The check engine error code is a low water level indicator. I dont know how they are related but the water level is correct and the sensor has been replaced on the resivoir tank but the symptom continues to occurr.

After seeing your post I wonder if the accelorator position sensor could be the issue.

Jakes have never failed as yours did.
