Need baggage bay door handle mechanism
Posted by Georges on November 1, 2012 at 12:09 pmThis is the door for the inverters so it is rather important for it to work properly. I have already ordered and received two different ones from Prevost and neither is the right one.
The plastic lever on the inside of the door handle that actuates the pivoting mechanism broke. The problem with the new ones they send me is the door lock key cylinder hole is too deep for my lock cylinder by 1/4″, so the lock will never work if I install the new one.
They have probably modified the design in recent years and the new one will not work for my 1992 H3.
Would anyone have an old door handle laying around? I have tried also several RV salvage yards around the country with no luck.

I took a picture with my cell phone but not sure if I can dowload it from cell to laptop, so I will take one tomorrow with my digital camera and post it on here, thanks.

This is the new part which is identical to the original, except for the lock cylinder hole, the red line shows the excessive depth by 1/4″. The second photo shows that and the red circle shows a bump in the plastic, which should not be there in order for the electric door lock actuator can be screwed down onto it.

I don’t understand the difference in the 1/4″ depth. They both look the same.
If you are not wanting the lock tumbler to enter the hole, rummage through various thin washers at ACE or Lowes or such. If the washer raises the casting surface removesome of the casting under the new washer.
The bump looks like it could be leveled off with a file, disc sander, grinder.
If I am wrong in your requirement, keep talking. I will give more ideas. This looks doable.

Both photos are of the same new door handle they sent me, I just wanted to show the electric solenoid mechanism and where it fits onto it as well as pinpointing the problem areas.
The main problem is my original lock tumbler is not deep enough (by 1/4″) to go all the way through. The new door handle does not come with a new lock tumbler, so I have to use the old one.
What I really need is to find an old bay door handle from another Prevost of around the same vintage (1992).

I agree, order the new lock cylinder from Prevost or go to a local lock smith (one that has his own store and not the hardware store variety)
Jon might step in here, on his last coach he changed out all his locks (TO KEEP HIS FRIENDS OUT) big grin!

Locks have become generic. The locks I changed were on an XL where all the engine access doors and gas tank doors had the same Viro lock and key as every single other XL made since the beginning of time. I changed to the round key type lock. It was a simple matter of just getting the correct barrel length and cam offset.
I don’t know if an H3 has the same condition regarding locks.

HI Georges,
I have gone through this exact problem with my 91 model H340. I spent a couple of hours with the parts folks at Nashville and also bought the longer lock tumblers. Another issue that I had was the slide that moves the electric lock will not fit in the slot of the new handle. The Prevost guys suggested to use a Dremel and cut off just a little. I think I am going to have to have a piece made that will go in the hole and make the notch on the lock extend up to where the lock slide needs it to be. I have thought about eliminating the electric lock and just make it a manual lock only.
Let me know if you have any luck as I need this fix as well. For the time being I just replaced the handle and that bay is unlocked.
By the way the extra length is actually taken up on the other side of the hole underneath the cap that is raised to insert the key. If you file that down then the cap has nothing to rest on and will recess in further than the other handle and not look right.

XL locks on the 3 coaches I have owned are nothing but old style Ford door locks that any good lock shop has a variety of lengths and can re-key to match the rest of your locks. The coach I just bought came without keys ;just took one lock out to shop and he made key to fit all. In fact needed 3 extra locks and he did them at same time. Bob.

Tom,
I did the same as you and only replaced the handle. Will try to find a longer tumbler to fit properly when I have time. I also thought about swapping it with one of the other complete mechanisms from a less important door on the coach.
Also, does your engine blow out any oil when you travel, because mine seems to leave a bit of oil residue on the rear engine cover after a highway trip. I just had the fan gearbox rebuilt as it was blowing a lot of oil out, now it is not so much but still evident.
Bob, did you get yours from a real locksmith or some other specialized merchant?

Just what I would call lock shop. They have everything from car hardware to electronic safe mech. Name in Evansville Ind Felts Lock shop. You call them to change locks on your home or get into your locked car. Or new hi end install. Bob

Hi Georges,
Prevost has the longer tumblers and can match them to your key number so you don’t have to have another key.
I don’t have any oil problems at the moment. Leaks on the 8V92 can be a challenge but are fixable. The only leak I have right now is a small transmission fluid leak but I have not had time to chase it down.

Yeah, trying to find an honest repair shop is the real challenge!
