  • side window worm gear

Posted by Thomas on December 31, 2013 at 2:50 pm

I am having trouble with my side window opening and closing. The one that cranks out just behind the passenger seat. I took the track off and opened the window manually. I can see a long shaft that goes from top to bottom with a worm gear that moves the arm to open/close the window. The worm gear looks like it should turn with the shaft but the shaft is turning and the worm gear is not. I don’t see any mechanical method of securing the worm gear to the shaft such as a set screw etc so I assume the gear was permenantly attached by the factory in some way. My question is can the gear be somehow glued etc. so it turns with the shaft again or do I need to get a part number for the whole assemly and order a new one.I have an account with prevost but have never used it and have not been able to log into the parts part of the site so I don’t know the part number. If I need to order a new part I’d like to get the ball rolling. I also need one other part which is the radiator cap on the aqua hot as it looks like craxxx I assume it should be replaced cause if it looks that way it must not be far from becoming an issue.

    Tom,

I have not had an issue with my windows, nor have I had one apart. However I can suggest some things you might consider to get an answer.

First, see if the parts manual or the shop manual specific to your coach gives enough detail for you to determine how it should function. The link to the Prevost publications is available on our links. Click on the top right to access them.

The second idea might be to contact Prevost service when they get back after the holidays to see if they can offer some advice. I do know the early XLII window mechanisms were changed but I do not know the details.

Prob: on one end or the other(crank or gear) there prob is about a 1/8 inch round pin thru the fiber/plastic type gear..I say this because it is common to the RV industry. It is not uncommon for that pin to shear.. It is a common roll pin available at any parts house.. normal cause is a stuck or hard operating window and excessive pressure being used trying to open it.. Just a observation…

No joy, The worm gear is metal and has no roll pin or set screw.

I examined another window with the same configuration quite a bit the other day and it has no pin or screw in fact it appears as if the worm gear is glued in place on the shaft due to seeing what appears to be glue oozed out on the top and bottom of the worm gear at the shaft. So if the worm gear is glued then I should be able to re-glue the worm gear to the shaft and be good to go.

I was able to obtain a new radiator cap for the aqua hot from a parts store.

As far as the links to docs I have not been able to get a search to find what I need and I don’t have access to the parts portion. I’ll keep trying to get prevost/volvo support to help me with that.

The servicemen from my storage facility are back from vacation so I spoke to the guy that handles the prevost and he said that the worm gear is stainless stell and is tack welded to the shaft and that the weld has likely broken. He said it takes about 6-10 hours to remove the assembly and get someone to weld it back to the shaft. He also said that there are no replacements parts or assembly so repair is the only option if it can be repaired. He said it is difficult to weld the stainless worm gear back to the shaft. He also said he may have to cut part of the window frame out in order to remove it. He said he would be willing to try jb-weld first just in case that should work since it would only cost me a couple of hours vs 6-10. So I guess I’ll let him give that a try and if it does not work then let him try to remove it and weld it.

    Thomas,

I’ve had several of my window linkage apart, but never had to work on the worm gear. Is this what you’re working on?

the mechanic just called and said that he would not attempt the repair by using jbweld and he needed 8hr or more at $125hr so I may just leave it and not use the window.

Wish we could just find a way to go back to the manual push open rod and forget this nightmare. If you remove the linkage it’s no problem to open and close the window, but no way to hold it open.

Is the nylon block inside the brass piece stripped out? If you wish to call I can walk you through removing the linkage. 865-388-7666.

I’m going to surprise Jeff with this post. Jeff is a master at Prevost and conversion work. I know him and we are going to make an announcement soon. If you have questions, and Jeff responds you can have confidence in his responses as you will soon see.

I also have one I’m having a problem with. I’d love to see an affordable fix for these windows.

I have an H with 4 bad windows as well… I think the design on these was pretty weak and according to Prevost Nashville Prevost switched suppliers and the replacement parts are more than $600 per window and several hours of labor.. So I decided to pick up a very thin metal Rod from Lowes and just use it to “help” them open. So far it’s worked great and I have $4k for fuel…

If anyone with an H has done a more perminate modification I would love to hear it.

Is the issue a broken weld between a shaft and a worm gear?? If the pieces are not hardened, drill a hole through both pieces and put a roll pin through the hole. A split point cobalt drill bit will work on stainless. The trick is to make sure the bit is cutting. If the bit spins without removing metal it will heat the stainless and once it cools it will be too hard to drill.

If you have a machinst buddy this should not be a big deal.

    Thanks, Milo
