  • Mystery oil line – 8V-92

Posted by Charles on May 4, 2018 at 12:33 am

This is a simple question for the experienced experts here.

I have a leaking braided stainless oil line that comes out of the block on the rear of the engine (toward front of bus). The line looks to be 3/8″ outside dia. and has a 5/8″ nut.

The problem is that this line is connected to an elbow and is in a verry narrow slot between the block and the flywheel accessory case. I looks like I will be able to loosen the nut using a crowfoot flare nut wrench.

I have traced this line forward in the engine compartment through a check valve and directly into the overhead chase duct in a 3″ or so tube. I have no clue as to where it goes from there and I am having trouble imagining what would need engine lubricant forward in the bus.

Can anyone tell what this line is for?

I’m going to guess, so be forewarned.

Line for a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

That was my guess too, but then why the check valve? Wouldn’t that prevent the gauge from working properly? I know it’s not much volume flow, but it still seems like it could prevent the pressure from relieving.

Thinking about it a little more, maybe it’s not a check valve but an isolator with a diaphragm? Kind of like a fuel pressure gauge. That way, if there’s a leak in the line, it doesn’t pump engine oil into the conduit, dash, wherever.

Just a guess here…My guess is the fuel return line going back to the tank. Not sure if 8V92s had fuel coolers or not.

You said the line is coming out of the block or head?

I would lean toward the fuel return line also. On my 8v71 it is in the back and very difficult to get to without pulling things off.

It also would have some sort of restriction in the line to keep some back pressure.

Chuck, you have your work cut out for you. First, verify if it is oil or fuel, and then take some photos.

    Thanks, fellas.

The fuel return line opinions are right answer.

Detroit sez to go the Parker for a new line and by golly, this morning I did.

Install tomorrow and give it a try.

    Happy motoring

Chuck, be careful under there. We want to see you and Barbie at Oysterfest 2019.
