  • Need help getting right rear compartment on H3-45

Posted by Bryce on April 29, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Howdy folks been a while since I logged in, but I’ve been lurking from my phone & some “hotel computers.”

Anyway here’s the story. I got a call from an associate in the charter business “that one of his drivers was down my way” and had a problem getting the compartment open that gives access to the dump valve (charter bus rest room) and also the engine hatch release.

Wanted to know if he sent his driver by my shop if we could help him get the compartment open as it needed dumped bad and was going to be on the road until Tuesday.

Well long story short there was more to the story than the owner was telling me.

The driver an I know each other pretty well and do “favors” for each other quite often.

The driver had told the owner to call and ask me if he could drop this H3-45 off to me an borrow any bus I might have on the lot for the remainder of his trip.

    And while I had their bus here could I figure out what was wrong with;

    #1) that comparment door.

#2) the A/C seems that since they’ve had the bus (got it in Decemember) it’s had one problem or another with the A/C.

Well now I know the whole story the driver needed a bus that #1 had working A/C and # 2 didn’t stink like a pig pen because it ain’t been dumped for like 3 trips out in a row now!

The driver said they have tried unsuccessfully to fix the A/C and also get that compartment open.

So I loaned him my SETRA S215 (with ice cold A/C) and sent him on his way.

Now I turn my attn. to this poor H3-45 that has been rode hard an put away wet.

I can hear linkage moving (loosely) when pull the handle on the latch but there is nothing happening on the release end of the linkages.

I can’t open the engine compartment to get a look at it because the release is in that compartment as well!

Anyone have any ideas of any trick I can use to get either of these compartments open without farther damage?

I tried to figure out where to get a down load of the manual on Prevost Car’s site using the VIN, but I either ain’t looking in the right place or don’t know what I’m doing there either.

The VIN on this jewel is 2PCH3349XV1011846

Any help at all will be appreciated.

I have to go back outside an play musical buses for our bus cleaner so he can dump an clean another one an get it out of the way so the last one coming in tonight can be put in the dump/wash station when it hits the lot!

I will check back for replies as I can. Or I can be reached @ the office/shop # 731-986-5999 or my cell 270-705-1139 thanks.

    BK,

I hope I’m not getting this to you too late to be of help, but it is possible to unlatch the H3-45 engine door without opening the A/C compressor door. It takes some good aiming with a 1/4 inch rod about four feet long (I used an awning rod) to reach the release latch from under the coach, but with some patience, it can be done so long as there is a gap between your holding tank and the inside edge of the A/C compressor door frame (mine has the plastic tank). The release is mounted inside the top compressor door frame about six inches forward of the rear edge of the door. It must be pushed up to release the engine door. With the engine door open, you have access to the compressor door latch and can simply unbolt the striker bar.

You must have access to bay number three to release the latch on the large condenser door. Often, you must pull the release knob repeatedly while pushing and pulling the door.

    ‘Hope this helps.

If the door handle on the side engone door will not open the door latch then the latch has failed or the rod that goes from the handle to the latch mechanism has come off, then you would have to drill out the handle and get your arm through the hole to pull the rod and hopefully open the side door. The large rear door will only open if you can get to its release handle but it is accessed through the side door.
