We are thinking of visiting the capital in early June to see smithsonian. Would also like to visit Annapolis again. Any suggestions for a good place to stay?

I always stayed at prince william travel trailer village just south of dc right off 95 south. Its close to the train station into dc and also close to the Marine Corps museum at Quantico (its free). there is always Cherry hill , of dc also handy to the train. -

Make sure to schedule a Friday evening. Call, or email your congressman and obtain free tickets for the Marine Corps Stand Down Ceremony at the Marine Barracks. Or, you can now get them direct from the Marine Corps via email at this address: http://www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/GeneralInformation.aspx
When it is over and they turn the lights back on, look around and see if you see a dry eye, that is if you can see through your tears. When you arrive, just get out of the way and follow. A full dress Marine will escourt Jill to her seat. You? Find your own way! You will not regret the time spent. Marine Band, Silent Drill Team, striking the colors. Once in a lifetime moment.
Order early as there is limited seating and it fills up fast. The above site will tell you about parking, time, etc.

We stayed at Cherry Hill. Train was great. Make sure you tell them your size and you might want to get a premium site for a bit more space.

Totally agree on the Marine Barracks. I have seen this several times and you have to be a brick to not get choked-up. As someone who spent 4 years of Army football Saturdays marching for the visiting “Great American Public”, the one exception to the widely held fact “the Navy can’t march” are these Marines! In the early 80’s a friend of mine was a 2LT there se we got to drink in the officers mess until everyone was seated. Funny tradition, all the officers snag the ladies in the club and escort them to their seats and the men just wander behind. My wife got a real kick out of that.
The surrounding area used to be so bad that the marine MPs would guard the visitor cars. 30-some years later the area is one of the newest hot-spots for nightlife.

We’ve lived in D.C. for a number of years and there are multiple Smithsonians which will take a number of days to go thru. Don’t miss Arlington National Cemetry, including the Changing of the Guard. There are so many sites which are “off the mall” but I’m not sure how much you’ve visited here before.
Cherry Hill is a great place to stay and great commute via the Metro. Another PC member is staying out at Lake Fairfax County Campground in June, but it’s not as handy to get to the Metro and driving into DC can be a bear from there during rush hour.

aquia pines campground , i think its exit 143 garrsonville /stafford exit on I-95, easy on and off. the also have a shuttle and a tour bus to take you to DC , at least they did. I lived in that area for about 30 years. we stayed there in our first bus GMC 4905 for about 7 months while our house was being built!
