  • 2017-Possible “Total Eclipse” gathering

Posted by Jim/Chris on January 7, 2016 at 10:50 am

Starting to think about our trip to the Jackson, Wy area. Jackson/Teton National Park area on August 21, 2017 will be directly under a total eclipse, where for two minutes, it’s almost dark.

it is a remarkable event to witness. During my time driving tour busses in the Yellowstone region, we had an 18 bus charter, February 1979, carrying eclipse gazers. Along with telescopes, etc., we also had on board NOAA passengers who were watching the clouds, to locate a spot in central Montana that was to be cloud free

There we were between Ryegate and Lavina, MT at sunrise to be at the point of totality. ..Remarkable experience

I Want to experience that again, and I want Chris to see it

called the chamber of Jackson this morning, and the gal was going to call next Monday with any new info from their meeting

Wyoming Stargazers are planning some events with equipment (telescope) at three different locations. Will have to find out more info.

    Jim,

There is no doubt that would be a great experience, but if a number of coaches participate would there be a range of locations from which to select. My guess is that time of the year sufficient spaces to accomodate a group of us will be hard to come by.

http://www.wyomingstargazing.org/2017-solar-eclipse/. Some town like Kansas City, or North Platte, NE will in the fringe of darkness, but towns e Columbia MO, Jackson, WY, Rexburg, ID etc are under the point of totality

    stay tuned

Using the map on the link it would appear anywhere along the center of the shaded area will be a total eclipse. That means for example I can drive to Cookeville TN, which is 2 hours away to see it.

If we were to create a rally as Jim suggests the best option at this point would be to identify a spot with space for us, based on who is going and based on trying to identify the location of the total eclipse that is the shortest distance for most attending. I’m kind of joking about this when I say we could all park at Jeff’s and drive about 2 hours to see the total eclipse, or all meet at the Branson KOA and drive to where it will be total, or have several mini rallies based on everyone’s home location.

OK, Now I am not kidding about going to Jeff’s. I just haven’t had a discussion with him about this yet.

I played with this map http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html and it can be seen clearly that a short ride from Jeff’s such as the Sweetwater exit on I-75 you could see the eclipse.

The whole Teton region will have a huge influx of “Eclipse Gazers” , population numbers never seen before in the area. Every nook and cranny will be booked per Jackson Chamber. Anywhere along the path of this eclipse will be crowded with gazers. We all have more flexibility with owning busses, since we don’t have to rely on conventional accommodations.

I spoke with The Teton County School District #401, Superintendant Woolstenhulme today about renting a hard and improved parking lot for dry camping. I explained 50K pound vehicles can’t park on grassy/soft dirt surfaces They have hosted Harley groups, bicycles races and others. Don’t know how large an area will be provided. It may mean a trip up there this summer to check it out. One can approach this area without harrowing mountain driving. Driggs and Victor Idaho are quaint small kitschy towns.

Dont know more specifics, but we are “in” either in Driggs or Victor Idaho, which both communities sit on the west side of the Grand Tetons, with sweeping vistas to the west, and in line of totality. Its a 30-45 minute drive to Jackson, the town. Imagine the majesty of the Tetons, then cloaked in eerie twilight by the eclipse. Wow!!

Until I have more info, I’m figuring arrival August 18-19th, with Eclipse on the 21 st. Then we all leave morning of the 22nd, since school starts the 23rd.

Superintendant Monty W. will be contacting me with further details.

We have ridden our motorcycles through there many years on our ride to Sturgis from California. It’s beautiful. We were just trying to plan a trip for August. I was thinking Colorado, but this sounds amazing!

    We would probably be in!!!

We’d be interested in a meet at Jeff’s place. Looks like the eclipse will be very close.
