Bay Freezer
We NEVER watch the TV in the bay, so we’re having it removed and replacing it with a freezer. We’ll be on the road full time in June, and we both enjoy cooking so much that we know the side by side in the bus is not going to be enough. Has anyone put a freezer in their basement, and if so, what kind/dimensions and any advice?
Incidentally, Signature Coachworks in Beaumont is doing this work, and they’re also putting hardwood flooring in our bus. I’ll post pictures of the finished product next month. I’ve seen several busses in which they replaced the flooring with hardwood, and they do a terrific job. 🙂

I’ve had both a Norcold and a Dometic fridge/freezer in the basement of previous motor homes. Of the two I preferred the Dometic. It had a digital thrmostat and did a great job holding the temperature right where I set it. They do come in different sizes. Use the biggest one that will fit.

we removed our basement TV about a year ago and never looked back.
the flatscreen TV is mounted in a nicely crafted teak cabinet. But, we wanted the storage space.
now, we have space for our folding bicycles and more.
About the fridge/freezer, we do have a huge Dometic box occupying half of another bay. it easily holds 20 bottles of wine with some soda cans on top, or, many lbs. of meat, or any combination of food items. We are happy to have this freezer. It is a time saver.
When we go shopping to Wallbangers (a Canadian joke, i.e. Walmart), or Sam’s Club and the like, we can stock the freezer box along with the fridge inside and have plenty of food items for quite some time.

I have a question regarding ventilation of the large Dometic CFX95DZW Fridge/Freezer unit in the bay. We want to install one in the forward pull-thru joey-bed, but wonder about the safety risk due to lack of airflow with the tightly sealing rubber gaskets around the bay doors. Are we risking a heat build-up and the unit going out, or would it actually be a fire risk and the bus might turn into a midnight torch while we’re sleeping?

We put a large fridge/freezer in the front bay recently. At the same time we put remote temperature sensors (Sensor-Push) in the unit and in the bay. In addition to being able to set alarm points, we get a display of the temperature change over time. It communicates with our WiFi and sends all the information to our smart phones.
We are using the cooler as a freezer so it is working hard in the warm/hot weather. So far we have only seen a temperature rise of a few degrees in the bay, nothing to worry about.
One thing to be aware of is be careful not to block any of the ventilation openings on the unit. It need some open space for efficiency.

we have had one in front bay long time get a little warm on hot days works fine I open door a little at night

We have the big Dometic unit with the digital controls. Got it new in my ‘15 Dutch Star and then replaced the Norcold that came with the bus with it. Never had an issue with it in either coach but like Les says, don’t block the unit’s vent holes.
Les, that’s a pretty cool looking fridge/freezer. I like the insulation wrap too.

We Replaced our Norcold unit that died after 16 years with an Engel brand that is identical to the Norcold unit that died. They have 2 sizes on Amazon.

Ron, the ARB is made in Australia, and yes, I’m married to an Australian…
The cover for the cooler is an option that increases the insulation. The 4×4 guys mount these coolers on the back of their Jeeps, out in the sun, and it is of paramount importance that the beer stays cool.
