  • Trailer Coupler/Hitch Information??

Posted by Davy on February 28, 2012 at 10:03 am

This is the coupler on the new-to-me trailer. Is any one familiar with this type of hitch. You pull the pin, raise the collar up, open the jaws, back the ball in, the jaws close around the ball and you close the collar and put the pin through.

Do you know how to lock it when I am unhooked? I have a standard coupler lock but I do not have it with me. I do not think it will fit this one. As you can see the pin locks. That is useful to keep the collar down and the hitch in place on the ball but not for security. A hammer would easily defeat that lock. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry about the pictures. It was raining when I went out to take them so I snapped them quickly.

Thanks is advance for your help…

Obtain another ball of the correct size. Weld that ball to a plate. The plate needs to extend out to the sides and back of the coupler to allow side plates to go up the side covering the locks in such a way as to allow key opening but prevent tampering/pounding.

You will need a hole for the pin in the side of one plate.

If you have the ability to make this you will understand the directions.

Certainley everything must be heavy duty to withstand abuse. 1/2″ steel should suffice.

That is a great idea, Jim. I will try that in the future when I have access to a good welder…

To my surprise the standard hitch lock did fit, but just barely.
