Kohler 20KW generator service DIY questions
I want to do the scheduled Kohler generator maintenance. I’ve never done it before, so I’m looking for some guidance. A few questions:
1. The fuel filters currently installed are NAPA 3390 and NAPA 3225. Neither the Kohler nor the Yanmar manual references two fuel filters…only one. My Liberty manual says the 3225 is primary, but lists a Yanmar filter (121850-55701) as secondary and I can’t find a cross reference to NAPA 3390…just trying to confirm that the 3390 is appropriate.
2. I will need to bleed the fuel system afterwards, correct?
3. The Liberty manual references a “generator blower belt.” Where is that? I see the alternator belt right in front, but don’t see another one.
4. Any tips or tricks that I should know?
5. Curiosity: The hour meter mounted on the unit reads 1408.1, but the remote meter in the electrical bay reads 842.7. I never saw the one reading 1408 until, today, so I guess I’ll monitor going forward to see if they happen to diverge in hours. Maybe the one was simply replaced after 560+/- hours?

3390 is a good number. When I change any fuel filter I fill it with fuel, but if it is mounted sideways I will power the electric fuel pump with jumpers and listen as the clicks increase frequency to indicate the system is pressurized and has fuel in it.
In your case the fuel filters are sitting in a position so all needed is to fill them before installation and the engine should start with no priming.
The belt referred to is accessible through the panel to the right hand sidewall in the electric bay. There is also the engine belt under the sheet metal shield.
My two hour gauges do not agree either, but are closer than yours. For my purposes I just use the one in the electric bay.

This mechanical newbie is proud to say that he completed his first ever generator service, yesterday…both the generator and I appear to have survived…albeit a bit sloppy in the process From the look of the oil and the air filter, I question whether it got serviced at the time of our purchase. At least I know that I’m set going forward.
