It is my understanding that Synthetic oil may be beneficial but the usage according to hours does not change. If the generator calls for a change every 100 hours of use, it gets changed …Synthetic or not… This was discussed at the United Engines’ seminar in Oklahoma City some time ago…

    Tim,

I have been a fan of synthetics for years. I switched to synthetic in my generator the first time I serviced it after purchase. I only have seat of the pants data with the generator but my conclusions are definitely starts easier, runs quieter, cooler and sounds much better. Like Pres I have continued to follow the recommended schedule for changes even with the synthetic. Overkill ? who knows but better too much service than not enough. If circumstances prevented an on time service I would be much more comfortable with the synthetic.

I use synthetic oil in everything I own. Have stretched gen service intervals to 2-300 hours after oil analysis.

I talked to Koehler. They said synthetic oil is not a problem to use. They still recommend same intervals, but I think you could stretch it if needed.

We have 20KW generators on our some of our work trucks. We use synthetic oil and change oil at approximately 250-hours. We’ve been doing this for 20+ years and have never had any problems or failures.
