  • New Gen Blower Fan

Posted by Peter on December 29, 2013 at 7:28 pm

I replaced blower fan behind generator today…took less than 1 1/2 hours from start to finish…undid 3 bolts of generator and took them out, loosened front right bolt and swiveled genrator out, resting generator on pallet forks of skid steer…

Then we climbed behind generator to remove old one…

then put in new one! We did not have to undo any hoses or wires…and we were able to shimmy under all the hoses… It would be extremely easy to redo the black foam on back of generator box…

In september I replaced all the old foam soundproffing in the generator bay. This foam was crumbling and had become dust and being sucked up into the air intake of the generator. The foam completely clogged the electric exhaust fan in the a/c bay. Had a broken exhaust pipe. The operating temperature of the generator ran typically around 185 to 195 degrees. depending on ambient outside temps and load on gen set. I always thought that was a little warm.

Replaced the soundproffing, left the 1/8″ led sounddamping and added a 2′ high density plasticfoam batts (looks like a crossection of a aero bar) and covered with heat resistive insulate silver reflective filiment. New exhaust custom heat blanket and 2′ stainless exhaust pipe. Installed a new electric exhaust fan that was located in A/C bay. The function of this fan was to remove heated air from the generator bay and piped the heated air out through the floor. Three intake holes in floor at the rear of the generator bay, pulls cool air from the outside beneath the coach and across the generator. Great system when everything is working. Replaced generator air springs.

Wow big job……. 4 days of work, and also used a skid steer to remove and stabilize generator.

$1700 later, well worth it. Operating temp is now 145 to 150 degrees…… didn’t believe the temperatures and used my temp gun on generator coolant manifold to confirm…….. same temperatures as gauge…. very happy and worth the effort.

Peter, I know exactly what you went through. bent like a pretzl. My back hasn’t recovered. Squeezing myself in a bay that is two times smaller than me. LOL
