Generator Slide
Posted by glen on March 15, 2020 at 9:43 amAny body ever had to remove the Gen Set out of coach? Mine is a on a slide and wonder if anybody else has had to remove/slide the whole unit out. Imagine there are several types of these slides. My converter is long gone for answers. Having an issue with it running about 30 minutes then dropping all current. Wrico Gen Set ( or put together by them) and have to get it out to check regulator out or replace. That’s what they are saying it “could” be.

Rick, indicate the converter of your bus and someone with a similar bus may be able to help.
Generator slides are often air actuated. Is there a small toggle switch in the bay? Make sure you release any locks before operating. Usually there is a locking pin somewhere on the slide rails. If so, it should have a pretty obvious handle release.

I have a rocker switch top front right of the bay opening. It can be difficult to see if you don’t know it’s there.. -
We had to remove our generator because of a leaking main seal after 5000 hours. We chose to leave this repair to the experts who built it for Marathon (in 1989), Martin Diesel in Defiance, OH. They removed it, cleaned it, performed 5000 hour service (seals, bearings, etc) replaced hoses, belts, fuel lines, and inspected the radiator. While it was out we cleaned and repainted the bay and replaced the sound proofing. We can not say enough about them, they are definitely a great company.

I forgot to mention…they conducted extensive load testing of it while on the bench. After installation they would not let us leave without running it in the bus for about 8 hours. They said it would be good for at least another 5000 hours.

That’s how mine came out, with a folk lift. However, if it’s on a slide the slide should come out far enough to service any part of the GenSet if the engine its self does not need repairs.

I have made fairly extensive use of a Harbor Freight motorcycle jack to lift and carry heavy items I had to remove from the coach for service. I haven’t removed a generator yet, but it would have the capacity.
I fully agree taking it to an expert is by far the best option.

Have tried to get several to look and most say no go. The engine comes out just enough to check engine goodies and not to generator. Be more than happy to let someone do it regardless of cost. Going to run it down East of San Antonio about 130 miles southeast to let someone else look see, So Tex Engine and Generator. Had it down to Texas Custom Coach and they replaced new Transfer Switch and new Magnum Pure Sine Inverter as I eliminated that as a problem.. They would’nt touch generator . They recommended So Tex, and I drove over in car but I didn’t like the looks of the shop. Already dropped antifreeze and hoses. . Marathon won’t touch it as it’s not one of there’s. Jeff is 1300 miles away. Always something.
Have also tried Outlaw Coaches and another I can’t recall. They don’t want to work on the antique buses.

Just walked out and checked. Have a couple 5/8″ bolts on back side of slide in aft compartment. Might be stops. Jon , looked and gonna take your advice on motorcycle lift as Harbor Freight in 12 miles away. Heck have Bobcat Skidsteer and Tractor with forks as well. If I can’t find anybody will tear it up myself.

Have you try calling these folks and just have a discussion of your issue.

I recommend you call LeMeilleurs RV, Truck & Equip in Kerrville, TX. Not far from you. They just dealt with my radiator problem. Call 830-895-2888 and ask for Service Manager David Clarke or owner Denise LeMeilleur. Feel free to tell them I pointed you in their direction. If you do a drive-by ahead of your call, you’ll be pleased.

Yeah called Wrico and talked to a guy, said he was an Engineer, that wanted me to get info off tag and there isn’t one. Bought scope Camera and looked all around the back no tag. Have all Original paper work with numbers from Dick the Guy who owned this place and sold it to Cole Conversions back in 1991. Found out, They just package the units they don’t build them. No Go with Wrico. Will call today and check that place out Dick as I drove by many times over the 2 weeks I drove from my place (Kingsland) everyday checking on my bus down in Pipe Creek (Texas Custom Coach) on Transfer and Inverter change out.

Glen: I’ll bet you came right through Kerrville on 16. The shop is up the hill just before you get to the football stadium.

Dick, Went by this morning and talked to David. Will call at the end of week and set appointment next week see what they can do. Nice clean place. I dropped your name and they already added 25% to ticket. You need to quit hanging around with Harry. Just a kidding. Thanks for the insight.

I took my coach to Wirco years ago. Dick is a great and helpful guy but had no interest in removing the genset from my coach. I had to go somewhere else in the area, have them remove it, put it on a pallet, put that in my van and take it to Wrico who used the exact same folk lift to remove it from my van. They did the repairs, put it back in my van and the other service company reinstalled it.
Strange way to do business.

Yeah the engineer Guy i talked to a couple weeks ago needed a better bedside manner. Rude and crude. If I need another Gen Set it won’t be from them.
