My heat gun is the one I pulled out of the water bay in my Liberty.

I have never ever used a heat gun for repairs or maintenance on the road.

In 20 years of touring 10 months out of the year I have never needed a heat gun

I’m sure Rocky was talking about a Infared Laser pointing thermometer to check tire temps, etc.

You can buy a Centech on sale at Harbour Freight for $17.99 which will work about as good as the expensive ones.

We use them in Racing to check track temps, and even use them on exhaust headers to verify EGT temps.

Thanks Jerry , I was referring to a Infared Tempature Gun . To Detect High Heat Temps that are abnormal. For Preventive Maintenance , Like Brakes Dragging , Bearings going out , Etc……..Old Timers Kicking in here ?

Now that I know what you mean I get it.

I have a Fluke which is a good quality, but any one will work, and even Harbor Freight quality will work. You are not as concerned with accuracy as you are with repeatability. The actual temperature of all the things we measure is not as important as the deviation from some standard or relative to something else. For example on meauring AC performance we are more concerned with the temps of the supply and return air. What those exact values are is not important, but the spread between the two is what we want to know.

When measuring tires or hub temps we look for consistency between wheels or wheels on an axle. If temps are the same side to side life is good, but if one is a lot hotter than the other there could be a problem.

Just buy an IR gun that has repeatable performance. If you shoot a temperature and then a minute later shoot it again is should be the same, but if the difference is a large amount and the only explaination is the gun then its performance is unacceptable.

I use a Fluke, but like has been stated repeatability is important. You also have to be aware, that if you are reading the temp of a particular area, the closer to the source the better. As you increase the distance you increase the area being averaged ( for example if you shoot from 6″ you are sampling a 1″ area, if you shoot that same spot from 12″ you could be sampling a 6″ area). This is only important if you are trying to read a small specific area.

I am now playing with thermal image….

Thermal image is a real step up. Most IR devices are point and shoot and deliver a temp at the moment in time. Thermal imaging implies measurements across a broader area?
