Fuel Mileage – H vs XLII
Just
for fun, here’s a comparison of fuel consumed on my recent trip for 2
similar blocks of actual mileage between my 01 Liberty XLII pulling a
Dodge Dakota vs my 02 H Marathon pulling a Wrangler.
H
– 4761 miles, 742 gallons of fuel = 6.42 mpgXLII
– 4321 miles, 720 gallons of fuel = 6.00 mpgThe
speeds would be similar, 65 mph using cruise most all the time. The
terrain was similar, western trips between GA and mountain states.
The Dodge was a little heavier than the Jeep and the Liberty had OTR.
Generator time would have probably been similar as well.So,
buy an H and save fuel.:) And just for the record, at no time during
the recent trip with many miles in the 90 degree temps were we not
cool in the H. The dual evaporators on the Marathon kept us plenty
cool. There were quite a few times when I had to turn the temp up
because there was frost on my knee’s and Nance had to add a second
blanket. Really, it’s true, would I stretch the truth even though I’m
not from east Tennessee with a steep driveway or have a bus repair facility off 411! -

My fuel economy on this 7000 miles trip was 6
in the mountains and 7.3 on flatland pulling 2011 jeep grand Cherokee. For an X2 not bad my average speed of 59 to 64 MPH CC on.

Did the XLII have the exact same motor as your current H3? (Detriot Diesel with the same hp?). Sometimes, I will see people post a DD with 500 hp and some with 515 hp.
I was wondering if our new Volvo engine would be the same as it will use DEF and have the weight of four slides. I’m not sure how much OTR air weighs compared to a roof air.
Just a stab in the dark, I’m thinking we’ll average 6.5. I like to run about 60 mph.
Your new Marathon does not look 12 yrs. old. That’s what I like about Prevosts, they are timeless.

The two times we have checked mileage on our H mirrors Tom’s. But, there is still less than 20K on a new engine. I expect that the fuel mileage will gradually increase a bit as we pile on miles.

Tom, glad to know you made it home….I am not sure how I got wrangled into your lies about being cold and your poor wife having to wrap herself in blankets. However I have figured out that this coach is a test if you can handle dash air only before stepping up to a triple slide coach with dash air….smart move…I know your bride will be happy finally when you make the move.
Mileage: maybe we should have a pool for how many miles you put on this coach prior to selling it!

I did not pay Jeff to say those things. But I couldn’t have said it better.
As much as we all want 10 MPG, as much as we all want $10 fuel, the bottom line is we get what we get and with the exception of what we do with out right foot there is not much we can do to influence the result.
MM, I believe the two coaches Tom references are non-EGR engines of the same horsepower. Keep in mind you do not pay for HP except when you use it so whether it is 470, 500 or 515 I doubt if that would have a great influence. I don’t know if the engines were both 14L or 12.7L. That might make some difference.

I was talking to Rick the featherlite salesman and he told me yesterday that Amadas Featherlite was in the process of building a dual salon 1 bedroom slide with bus air.
That should be interesting to see once it’s finished, I’ve always wondered why one of the converters hasn’t built one yet .
Might be the best of both worlds:)

If salon is another word for living room then it sounds like the coach has two living rooms but only the single bed room? My guess from posts over the years the market would be far greater for 2 bedrooms and a living room.
Sounds like the owners of that coach would sleep together, but they can’t relax in the LR together.

Two slides in the living area and a slide in the bedroom would be a good floor plan from my point of view. We had a class A with that configuration and it worked well.

What has my mind unable to grasp the concept that reads to me like two salons, not three slides is the fact if there are more than two slides (both of which have to be on the same side of the coach) there is not going to be Prevost OTR. The problem is with slides the ability to duct supply and return air.
Having said that some converters in an attempt to overcome the strong selling point that OTR has, they have created their own multi evaporator AC system and they call it over the road air.
So if that is what is being done, 2 living room slides, a bedroom slide and a converter installed AC system then it is more understandable.

I’ve had 4 slide coaches, and I can’t imagine why anyone would need more than two slides in a coach.

Having four slides in our current coach I can’t see going to less. We are currently in Asheville, NC, parked for 6 days with all four slides out. The room is something I don’t want to give up.
Our set up now is that we have two recliners across from our sofa. We have the ottomans out along with two small coffee tables and still have room to walk between them. If we had only one slide in the living area, it would be tight, I would have to move the ottomans or not use the coffee tables.
I have no interest in OTR as I’ve never had it. The dash air should work fine on most days. We will have 4 roof airs that I can run as many as I want off of the 4 inverters. I’ll probably run the genny as they need to be exercised anyway.
I guess that’s why Baskin Robins has 31 flavors, everybody stays happy!
