  • Does the Converter matter with a 20 year old bus?

Posted by christopher on December 29, 2020 at 7:53 pm

As I research acquiring my first Prevost, I’m wondering how much it matters if the converter no longer exists.

I’ve been looking at coaches converted between 1998 and 2003. The merits of going with a Liberty, Marathon or Featherlite seem obvious, if for no other reason than their longevity. Clearly quality craftsmanship and customer service got them here today. There is still a Konigseder or Schoelihorn to call when you get stuck.

But what about the other converters that didn’t make it? Are there operational and financial drawbacks to consider when buying say a Royale or Country Coach?

Or is it irrelevant when you’re talking about any 20 year old coach?

    Thanks.

    Chris

We dont think it matters. We used to own a Beaver XL40 from 2009-2015. For Country Coach, you can get work and advice from oregon Motorcoach or Premier RV Services

for Royale, theres Dan Jourdan of Royale Phoenix. He has build info about all Royales except three

Angolas and American Coach i believe Panterra Coach has much experience with these converters

    There are sources

There are some nuances that may affect the choice of a coach that may no longer have a converter standing behind it.

In broad general terms a coach with converter specific proprietary features may be a bit more difficult to maintain than a coach with simple or less complex control systems.

A Country Coach has a proprietary control system and accessing parts or information may be more difficult than a coach like an Angola or Royale that lacks such a system.

Coaches newer than late 90’s coaches were starting to have control systems such as Crestron with converter specific software and it is important to determine if there is support for coaches whose converters will not or cannot make the codes available. Having said that as mentioned above there are service centers that can work on those systems.
