  • Tow Bars What is your take on ones available

Posted by George on August 1, 2022 at 10:04 pm

I researched this topic and 2019 was latest threads.

There was talks on Blue Ox redesign for weld defects.

There was discussion of tabs difficulty in releasing.

Difficulty in connections to base plate.

Can a GMC Sierra with recovery hooks be converted to accept the tow bar without a lot of change to the truck?

What is your recommendation for a tow bar and reason for your choice for it?

    for a tow bar

Roadmaster, just compare the pin size from Roadmaster to Blue Ox. I’ve used the Roadmaster Brakemaster for 15 years.

Many, many years ago I have a Road Master. When one of the arms actually pulled out I went with a Blue Ox. I full time so I tow A LOT! I have towed over 300,000 miles and am now on my 3rd as everything wears out. I like my newest one best as they have improved the release handle function and I have not had a bind when it was time to unhook since purchasing this one about 2 years ago. The 2 previous were 10,000# but I now tow a Jeep Cherokee so I dropped down to a 7,500# version.

Like Don said. Roadmaster 10K. Very heavy duty. Rigged it up on our FX F250 Supercrew.

I must be the odd one out with a Demco Excalibar:

I like it, except the small red retainers that hold the bars in their storage position can bend very easily if you don’t use the proper procedure to put those bars in their storage position.

The main reason I got it was that I thought Demco made decent products, based on the Air Force One, and I found it for $500 off via eBay.

Had a blue ox that worked well for years and took a lot of abuse.

Replaced a couple years ago with a Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar – chose that mostly because it was in-stock and would arrive in time for my trip.

Goes without saying – check your hitch and pins at each stop. Had one of the round spring clips like the left fall out. Replaced with a spare like the right in below image.
