Temperatures on Pressure Pro for tires

Interested in temps on a 100 degree day especially.

Last week through Oklahoma (105 degrees) on the road all day, I saw a max of 125 degrees f. Pressure rose from 110 to about 130.

Driving I-57 through Illinois there were so many deep pot holes that our Pressure Pro Pulse monitor kept resetting until it finally flashed the message “You appear to have entered a war zone. Seek shelter and we’ll try again tomorrow!” 🙂
Ultimately, the monitor just shut down and would not reset until we stopped for the night. Illinois highways are brutal.
We once received (last March) what turned out to be a false/errant temperature reading of 195 degrees on our front passenger-side steer wheel a few months ago. Had Baton Rouge Diesel check the brake chamber, pads, disc – conducted a DOT test and all was fine with the wheel and tire. Swapped the sensor with the driver’s side and never had an issue since.
Typically saw temperatures up to 125 crossing the desert states. But, mostly in the 110-115 range.
All things considered, grateful for the Pressure Pro system sensors and monitor. Just wasn’t able to use driving most of I-57.

This is a serious comment.
If a TPMS ever shows excessive temps STOP. Immediately use an infrared temp gun to get the temps off the wheel, tires and hubs.
Driving with a high temp reported is a high potential cause for a bus fire due to a dragging brake or bad bearing, low pressure or any other issue that can end up destroying the bus.
Once the warning is shown to be a TPMS problem it is OK to drive again.

Tire pressures will naturally increase 10 – 15% over cold pressure, after running for more than 90 minutes. It is normal for a tire (cold) at 130 psi to run at 150 psi (hot).
Cool down is three hours of stopping time.
Temperatures. The general rule of thumb is that inside the tire cavity, the temperature will stabilize when the tires warm up, to “ambient plus 60 degrees F”.
So, if you are in Phoenix, at highway speeds, in the summer, running on concrete and it is 110 degrees out, the internal cavity temperature could be 170 degrees…. the sunny side may be warmer, and changing from concrete to asphalt can also change internal operating temperature. It is important to observe the variables around you before worrying.
If tire pressures and temperatures appear to be higher than these values, and it’s across the axle…. SLOW DOWN. You may not have enough pressure for the load, or you may be exceeding the speed capabilities of the tires (75 mph). Drive slower and observe if the temperatures/pressures go down.
If it is one tire, then as Jon mentioned, slow down and prepare to stop, and prepare to stop SOON. A steer tire that is running flat will deteriorate within 5 miles, at highway speeds. Getting to the next highway exit may not be a viable choice, sadly.
Two other comments-
1. Some TPMS sensors that are fitted to valve stems will not see these high temperatures, but they will still record that pressures and temperatures are rising. They are still providing valuable data.
2. Some TPMS manufacturers that are fitted to the inside wheel well have proprietary algorithms that adjust the dashboard readings for ambient temperatures, in order to prevent false alarms (especially in the cold). With that in mind, I do not know if their formulas are adjusting for hot pressure.
The best rule of thumb, is if you see “ambient plus 60”, slow down and try to understand why (flat tire, wheel bearings, brake drum). Tires running at temperatures higher than 195 degrees cannot cool themselves off, and are experiencing permanent damage.

That’s exactly what we did…took the immediate next Exit, parked overnight to ensure it cooled off; also checked axle hub oil levels on both front steers – which were full. Next morning, we backtracked @35 miles to Baton Rouge Diesel – where they thoroughly inspected every aspect of the tire, brakes/disc, calipers and axle. Cost us a couple hours of labor (they actually spent closer to three hours…and, they took us in immediately on a Monday morning!). Also, ensured all tires were at proper inflation.
I checked the TPMS monitor every few minutes between Baton Rouge and Naples – without incident. And, it has continued to operate without incident these past months and several thousand miles.
Have also added an infrared temperature gun to our tools for future safety checks.
