Valve Ajustment
Posted by Art on February 13, 2017 at 9:35 pmOn my 97 series 60 Detroit 470 Hp do the valves require ajustment and if so how do you get to them?

Detroit’s maintenance information on the series 60 says to adjust the valves at 60,000 miles and then not again unless performance symptoms occur.

You have to tear apart the bedroom floor and some have an access panel. I had a 97 Royale but don’t remember if it has the panel.
Andre?

An alternative is to do what American Fleet in Springfield, MO does and that is to move the engine back. They can often do that as quickly as it takes to disassemble parts of the bedroom to get clearance above the engine.

If you have a 45′ coach with a rear walk in closet, there is a panel in the floor under the carpet in the closet. I belive it is the top of the first step in the closet. Peel back the carpet and you should see a panel held down by 4 bolts. Once that panel is pulled there should be plenty of room to get the valve cover off.

Except when a cabinet has been built over the panel. Then disassembly of the cabinetry is required before you can even begin to lift the carpet.
The ease or difficulty is going to be determined solely by what the converter did on your particular floor plan or conversion.

FYI, if your coach has no jake brakes and the 2 piece valve cover, it’s easy.
