The correct paint for a 60 series Detroit is blue not green. Alpine green is the oem color for 2 cycle Detroits. Part number for the blue is SD1-5237.

Green is widely available, blue is not. Hence the bias to green.

Our coach is a 1994 shell . I was told that is when Prevost switched to the series 60 12.7 DDEC III in Their Mid year production the engines were painted Green. Our engine is Green.

The Series 60 engine color was blue. It is a powder coating and as it ages and goes through various heat cycles of the engine it has a color shift that gives it a greenish look.

To get a more accurate match I took a big chip of the finish that came off of a pulley to Lowe’s and they matched it.

I bought the powder coating finishing line many years ago and it is installed in my daughter’s factory in Jamestown NY.

For those who do not know, powder coating is a process that sprays a dry powder on parts to be finished. The powder adheres electrostatically and then the parts being finished pass through a curing oven that brings the temps of the parts up to about 400 to 450 degrees. The powder flows (melts) to form a smooth finish that looks like a heavy coating of paint.

Huh. We continue to learn something (from Jon) every day on the PC Forum.

I didn’t think about the engines being powder coated. I’ve seen the pictures of rebuilt engines that Brian Stanton posts to FB in bright blue. I wonder how American Fleet finishes those engines. Power coat? Paint?

Can paint be applied to powder coat and be expected to stick? Is there good adherence of the paint to the cured powder coat?

Unless the powder coating is a material intended to protect against adhesion such as teflon coatings, paint or power should be able to be applied and it should have no problems with adhesion.

Having said that however the surface has to be clean and that means a white cotton swab with a solvent should be able to be wiped on the surface and it should remain white. There is also a limit to thickness, beyond which certain coatings, paint or powder can start to lift.

I am certain anyone that paints or recoats an engine is not looking for the same standard of finish in terms of appearance and adhesion that is expected of new parts getting a factory finish so an engine for example might get a good solvent or steam cleaning and a fresh coat of paint intended to look good for a short period of time.

Even the original powder coated finish on the engines doesn’t begin to approach the quality we expect of the painted chassis.
