  • Upgrading from AGM to LiFePO4 – Keeping it Simple

Posted by Jerry on June 22, 2025 at 7:01 pm

    Hey Guys,

Happy Summer….Hey just want to throw this out here, I mentioned earlier this year on the POG site about going to Lithium and wanting to keep it simple. So I have the Marathon chassis and 6 4D 12v AGMs at 210ah per totaling 1260ah. Keeping it simple ideally I’m thinking of just replacing the 6 with 6 LiFePO4’s at 200ah totaling 1200ah. I don’t think the 60ah would make much of a difference with the efficiency of the Li’s versus AGM. Also I thought about going with 280ah Li’s which would give me over 1600ah’s but I think that would be overkill or not sure if that configuration would work with my inverter/chargers (?? should). But also I thought of reducing the number of batteries and still go with the 280ah’s but limit it to 5 versus 6 giving me 1400ah. Attached is my house battery drawing….Any thoughts out there for those that has switched to Li?

Hey Jerry did you wire them same as your photo? My 97 Royale came with 5 8D batteries new and some where down the road it ended up with 4 Lifeline 8D batteries 255 amp hour total 1020 amp hours. Not knowing any better I put in 4 LiTime 280 amp hour batteries 1120 amp hours. Now I know 3 of those batteries would have plenty for my coach. Went through a lot of scratching my head, Had it wired just like the AGM’s, Wired in parallel pulling positive off 1 end and ground off other end, batteries were discharging all over the place, Rewired with bus bars way better, But 3 Li batteries would have been plenty 2 would have worked.

Hey Jerry looking at drawing you have 6 House batteries and 2 chassis?? looks complicated they are all tied together? Is that a 24v coach?

Hey Art…There are 6 house batteries but the two batteries in the drawing are for starting the generator. They are separated by the Vanner isolator. My chassis batteries are located in the engine compartment and are not connected or charged by the generator, but the 50DN alternator. Now the alternator does charge the chassis batteries and the house batteries.

I see that is similar to mine, Did you say you just have the DN50 24v and not another? Converters are all different.

Yep I only have one alternator.

    Hey Jerry

Did you end up changing out your batteries and what did you go with ??

I have the exactly the same set up as yours mine is 1993 Marathon XL

Also have you upgraded the inverters ??

      Hey Jeff,

No I put that on hold last summer decided to remodel the salon and cockpit with new vinyl plank flooring. I’ve been pricing Vatrer and LiTime Lifepo4’s, but thinking about keeping my Xantrex inverter/chargers based on the location. I thought about Victron’s but I will need to totally reconfigure the bay because they are much larger….even the multiplex units. Also it will be a little more complex for Marathons because they wired the generator start batteries with the house battery setup. So I may need to purchase Lifepo4 start batteries as well…not 100% sure yet. I will be taking the house battery compartment apart this spring (pulling the drawer assembly) to get a better look at the wiring configuration. I will need to find a good location for the bus bars.

    Hey Jerry

Sounds good one project at a time with these units.

I did find a guy that works on Prevost and class A coaches that lives near me.

Probably going replace both inverters because they are not working at all then maybe see if three or four

    house batteries would be sufficient.

Yep for sure…have to do one at a time, it could get overwhelming. Let me know how your inverter upgrade and battery replacement goes.
