BTW, is the belt that turns the fan gear a little loose?

On edit: I was paying attention to the nice Alpine Green paint job that I didn’t notice the detail of the black paint! Extra nice!

Mark, normal….see the belt air bag empty…will inflate immediately upon start. Geo.

Air to the engine air bags was off so I can work…always before I start the coach I let aux air into the system (yellow valve / switch under driver seat compartment) to inflate the engine air bags, avoid belt skipping at startup.

We picked up some engine paint in Las Vegas in June. It was DD Series 60 Blue. Made an improvement!

What did you do and use to prep the surfaces for painting?

I painted the engines on all my coaches. The prep work involved removing any built of grease or dirt and grease combined, then wiping it down with a decent solvent. I used laquer thinner. I degreased it with Simple Green.
I have used sparay cans of Rustoleum silver as well as brush on Rustoleum silver on the first engine whish was an 8V92.
On the second one I used Tractor Supply green brush on which wasn’t exactly the color but it looked good.
On the current coach I had a big chip and Loew’s matched it close. The original Detroit Blue shifts color after it ages so my engine is closer to the color it had become, and not what it looked like when new.
That’s the second bus and it was aged about 5 years since it was painted. I think the darker areas have more to do with the surface of the casting than the paint job or color. The devil is in the details so I used a flat black to paint the bolt heads because before painting they had a black finish.

How much removal of belt pullys, hoses, etc. are people doing and how much taping off are people doing to keep the paint where they want it to be when using spray cans?

That all depends on how you want the final result to look.
To make it look like it did when it came out of the factory a lot has to be masked or taken apart. You can spend days getting it ready for paint.
