Thanks all for your input. The thought of dropping the old (or new) one into the tank scares the hell out of me. The flapper isn’t leaking at this point, I was just thinking about doing this job as a preventative maintenance sort of thing. Perhaps I’ll just buy the gasket so I have it on hand and let sleeping dogs (or flushing toilets) lie.
