  Wiper blade preservation

  To hold the wiper blades off the glass when storing the coach, I use two rather large pop rivets through the holes in the wiper arms. Lift the arms and slip the nail-end of the rivet in place to position the arm to hold the blade off the windshield. If you forget to remove the rivet prior to driving away the rivet will stay in place. (Of course you’ll have to stop and remove them if you need to use the wipers.) I also use these rivets when installing the sun screens over the windshield and under the wiper blades. The rivets hold the blades away from the windshield making it much easier to install the sun screen without the chance of breaking a wiper arm (very expensive to replace).

  The rivets are long enough to go all the way through the arm (about 1 1/4 inch) and the rivet end is long enough for a good grip about an inch.

  I don’t get it… Why do you need the wiper blade held off the windshield or the sun shades? I’ve had 6 buses and a bunch of plastic and never had an issue with wiper blades failing early or effected by contact to the glass or shield.

  Keeping the weight off the blades keeps the rubber from “taking set”. Good southern term. Looks like a good Idea to me. I’ve been using tennis balls under the wiper arms for years.

  Yup! JCarroll has it right. When the blade parks with force on it, it learns that folded over position and in most cases chatters when put in use. Keeping the force off the blade lets them retain their molded-in form so they flop back and forth as they should.

  Something else most drivers of all vehicles don’t do is wash their wiper blades. Instead they replace them as worn out when they don’t wipe clean. Just use a whte paper towel (no dyes in the white towels) and rubbing alcohol to clean the wipe-surface. The blades will work like new.
