Prevost vs Blizzard
Posted by Chip & Pam on January 22, 2016 at 9:48 pmit’s a good battle. The old XL bus is doing quite well but Ma Nature is tossing more and more snow. The winds are also picking up. Snow is piling up on everything.
So so far we have shore power & water. Our Generator is prep’d for action. The Webasto is keeping us warm & we stocked the pantry and fridge. I have a good shovel and strong back and best of all, we have great winter campers at our camp.

Let me understand this correctly. You’re camping in your Prevost, very close to Washington, DC during what could be the greatest snow storm/blizzard to ever hit our nation’s Capitol. Please confirm.
If you are, and the opportunity presents itself … make sure you are outside to experience “thunder snow”. It it one the most unique experiences that Mother Nature can provide you. I’ve experienced it once while walking three miles in a huge Wisconsin snow storm as a teen ager and then again which driving in a car near La Crosse (WI) in heavy snow.

Good on ya Chip, I’m impressed! We’re headed out to the Snowy Mtns of Wyoming for a couple of weeks of snowmobiling on Tuesday. We’ll be parked at 8500 feet with about 6 to 8 feet of snow around. If I get a chance I’ll post up a pic of the bus with the pickup and sleds hooked up.
I just don’t get why all these folks head south (-: (-: (-:

I have found the more snow you have the easier it is to keep the bus warm. We were in the historic Tulsa blizzard a few years ago. It was the most snow they had ever dad, the most wind they had ever recorded with snow and temps below minus 20 several nights. Because of several feet of snow on the ground around the bus, we had no trouble keeping warm with minimal heat.
If you can keep power, you will be fine. If not, fire up that generator and let it run, keeping the exhaust shoveled clear of course.

confirmed, we are full timers in the DC area. No thunder snow today. I was out most of the day with the snow shovel.
The bus is doing very well . We did get a significant amount on the roof. First thing this morning I had to remove it.other than being tired, we are doing quite well.

Storm is over in DC. Not as bad as the weather folks made it out to be. We had 24 inches. The Wife, Cats & bus are doing great. Cleaned up the site and cleared the roof. Then we helped out around the camp.
Thanks Prevost & Country Coach for making such a great machine

Which RV park in Ft. Belvoir are you in? Full timing there (Cherry Hill north of DC doesn’t allow) ok?
-
Your bus looks great against that snow. Not to mention heck of a job shoveling that driveway. -
Can anyone stay at Fort Belvoir, Virginia? Or do you have to be active/retired military? If one is going to visit DC for any length of time, it is a good place to stay for a week and easily get into DC to see all there is to see?
-
technically we are not “full timing” by the way they define it. We keep moving spots. We depart and take a few trips to help reset the clock. We do our best to stay within the rules. We also have the option to make separate reservations as I’m retired and Pam is still in.
Cherry Hill is the nicest civilian camp here.
To stay at belvoir you need to be active duty, guard, reserve military. Retired or I think, a veteran with VA card. Due to the increase in the threat conditions, they don’t take in civilian campers without some sort of military sponsorship. I.E.: your son or daughter is serving in the area.
The other decent military campground is at Fort Meade.
George – thanks for the kind words on my shoveling. My body is sore but my spot is clear

Chip,
Have you tried the FAMCAMP at Andrews? We stayed there in our previous coach when we brought our friend’s ashes to be buried at Arlington. -
per
I have looked into Andrews Famcamp. I work on base there. The main problem is that Pam works over near Arlington/Fort Meyer. The drive from Andrews to her work, in the rush hour, is horrible. So, I have the hard commute and Pam stays happy. The other issue I have with them is the facility. It does not have 50 amp at many spots. It also does not have sewer at all spots. Top that with the 2 weeks and out rule (even if they have spots that are not occupied or even reserved) . My coworkers have stayed there and were very unhappy. You would think Andrews would be the cream of the crop for military campgrounds but it is far from it. They have a complete empty neighborhood were old Navy housing used to be. The houses are gone but the streets, sewer and electric is still there. We have asked the base to consider putting in a Famcamp in this location. So far nothing.
