we are currently full timing in our RV. I have been looking to upgrade our SV360 in motion SD satellite unit to a DirectTV HDTV SWM unit. Currently the SV360 is a brick on the roof. I am using a SWM slimline “portable” to get HDTV.

We currently have a HD-DVR and a genie. The system works well and I have no issues other than the slimline being so big and I need to be very careful not to warp the dish when moving siutes or transporting

it in our bus.

i looked into the wingard traveler and the KVH RV systems. The wingard picks up the Ka band needed for HD and the KVH is only Ku band compatible. The no brainier is the SWM traveler on the roof and use the tripod mount slimline when the roof unit is blocked by trees. Here in lies my dilemma.

I need to know if the rumors I have read are true. Is DirectTV working with manufacturers on a in-motion capable Ka band HDTV system? If so, when will we see this? I do not want to buy a traveler and then find out Direct has a better system next year.

My Bottomline line is to have HDTV using my HDTV DVR for recording multiple shows. In motion would be awesome but not a deal breaker. I also would really like a better portable HDTV setup similar to the wingards have for SD. The slimline I have is succeptible to warping so a smaller more portable SWM would be great.

DTV rumors say 2017… but who knows?? The sooner the better !!

I have a Winegard Travler on the roof. Works great…second coach I have had with it. Pulls in the HD stuff great, and is much better in the rain than the Tracstar ever was. My Tracstar still works (as far as I know), but I have not used it since we got the Liberty. The Winegard is great…push a button to turn it on and it finds the satellites with no user interaction needed. When done, puch the button to stow it. Doesn’t get much easier.

I have heard the rumors about in motion too, but I have not seen any confirmation on it. I wouldn’t wait, but since you have the portable dish, maybe you can. The mounted one is just so easy to use and is not going to get stolen or tipped over in the wind etc.

Jeff Rowe installed my first one, and Liberty did the current coach prior to my owning it.

I do not have any contacts of significance but by coincidence, I asked a supervisor at Direct TV today if there are any changes in the works that would outdate my Tracstar… it really works well for all of our needs…

She reviewed her documents and also said she would ask others …but she stated they have no changes in store at the present. time…

Has anyone heard anything to counter this?

I do know that I cannot get HD without an HD antenna…

I have been looking at options…..not very well informed yet.

Call Sats2go in Houston..he is in the loop with DTV..he’s’ the one that reprogrammed my Tracstar 360..super guy…. call 281-564-2828.

He also told me about DTV’s future plans for the new services.

sorry for the delay in responding. Work is taking its toll on my postings.

here is what i have found out in my research. There is only one dome manufactuer that makes a Direct TV HD inmotion unit. The intelian S6HD. Neither Raymarine, Wingard or KVH can support the KaBand requirements for a inmotion Direct TV HD system.

Wingard has the open refector Trav’ler system but it is for stationary viewing only. KVH can’t manage the Kaband signal that Direct primarily uses for HD. Raymarine is similar to KVH.

I have sent an inquirey email to intelian to confirm the S6HD can do what i’d like for the bus:

a) inmotion HD

b) work with the HR44 DVR

c) record multiple shows at one time

d) allow viewing of a show on one channel while recording on multiple others

all of the above items are what i currently am able to do with my “portable” setup. If the S6HD does the job as they state, i may go with it. The only downside is cost. Currently internet prices run from 8k on the high side to 6.9k on the low side. It is very expensive. My wife suggested that if i am so bent on the intellian, i should wait for black friday or cyber saturday to purchase. I’ll let the group know what i hear back from intellian. Hopefully they can confirm the capabilities.

The Intelian S6HD is over 28″ high, and over 27″ in diameter. Fine on a boat, certainly a challenge on a bus.

John, thanks. You bring up a very good point. Something i skipped over in my little quest. My Sv360 is 12.7 inches tall and my clearance on the bus is 12 foot 7 inches. If i replaced the SV360 with the intellian i would be 13.8. Arrrghh…, its back to the internet for more research.

What are the 2016 & 2017 conversions running? With HD being as popular as it is, im curious what the converters are putting on.

Mainly two dishes…one in motion for SD and one stationary for HD. In motion HD is not going to be an easy fix for our coaches because of the size and our limit on height.
