  • Insurance mess

We traveled to the Escapees in Livingston Texas this week. The plan was to register the bus and get our domicile stuff set up.

To get the bus plated in Texas we needed to have an inspection. No problem as a place was just down the road. We arrived and set about to get the inspection. This is where things got a wee bit screwy. You must have a Texas insurance policy on the vehicle. Since we just retired from the Air Force and had the bus registered in Florida, it should not have been difficult to get our policy moved over. Yea, you would have thought so.

After calling the insurance company that handled our safeco insurance, we were told our rates would be higher. Hmmm.. no tickets, no claims in many years. We thought it may go up a tiny bit but we were in for a shock. The company said the best policy we could get was with progressive. My wife talked to them and walked back with a stunned look. They were going to raise our rates over 300%. what the frick!!! The agent must have been high. He tried to say that full timer insurance in Texas was up due to the flooding and damages from hurricane Harvey. What??? If you were fulltime and got your rig flooded, you were not paying attention. Fulltime means bug out from any area that would flood. I don’t freakin get it. We are in a 98 XL rivet mobile. We are not in a 2017 X3. The insurance agency was full of it.

i was extremely angry at our Insurance agency. This was a crock. We decided to get a meal and discuss options. It turns out there was a insurance agent in the same strip mall as the restaurant. We ate and walked over to the agency. We discussed our dilemma and asked if they could help.

After a small time running rates between progressive & Foremost, we got a foremost fulltime policy with full coverage and a 1K deductible. Cost was 300 dollars more per year than Florida. Not 300% more as quoted by the agency out of Kentucky. We dumped Kentucky and went with these folks. Never again shall we do business with them.

we got the inspection done. Went to the county tax office and got our plates. Mission accomplished, we are now registered, licensed and insured in our home state. Drove back to Dallas and have bedded down at our site.

we used to deal with Brown & Brown out of Louisville KY. The quoted us $5300 per year. We were paying 1800 for the same coverage. Highway robbery was what came to mind.

We were with Nationwide, but they were going to raise our rates by $500 this year. We contacted Miller Insurance agency advertised on PC, and they got us a much better rate through Progressive. Foremost would have been even less, but they required a covered area for the coach–supposedly due to potential for hail damage. Never mind the coach has been through a couple of bad hailstorms with no damage. So far, so good!

Renewed our TX policy last week with Miller Acency. It went up about 10% or $150/yr.

There are a lot of factors that influence premiums starting now with a market that is not being served by a large number of insurance companies. The lack of competition has driven rates up significantly and I am very concerned that shopping for cheap insurance is a high risk. I went through a serious issue and because my insurance company at the time had considerable knowledge of conversions getting the coach repaired with no hassles was easy.

But now we have the need for insurance and some will sell insurance cheaply thinking our coaches are just an RV. But when we have a claim we find out the hard way if we do or do not have good coverage, and how much grief we are going to get dealing with a claim.

My free advice is to only deal with an agent such as Miller or Explorer that has a history of providing insurance for Prevost conversions and will not place your policy with a company that thinks Camping World can fix damage.

Apart from having a policy that covers a conversion there are other factors that influence rates such as locked storage, recreational use as opposed to full time use, an appraisal (or agreed value), your driving record (a CDL helps), etc.

When I was shopping in October because National Interstate was not going to write any longer, the only one I could find that would give me an agreed upon value was Safeco. Miller did not have any company that would write an agreed upon value. I don’t know if it was because my value is high, or not, they just told me they had nothing to offer.
