  • Mechanical oil pressure gauge

Posted by Chip & Pam on February 9, 2018 at 2:39 pm

Yesterday I got my Radiator and coolant system flushed. All went well. I now have Rotella ELC NF in. Temps staying at 195.

when I got back to camp,I noticed a significant amount of oil blow by in the vicinity of the mechanical oil pressure gauge in the upper right area of the compartment. When I looked at the gauge it was full of oil and that the oil seep was coming from the gauge. The gauge is toast. The lens is keeping in the oil. Not safe & not cool. Gotta get it fixed.

i checked in here and did a search. Found out John Carrol had the exact same issue in 2015. He installed a ball valve in the line and only opens it when he is checking in the back. Sounds like a good safe idea. Adding a manual ball valve prior to the gauge will mitigate the risk of oil loss with another gauge failure.

Thank you Prevost Community for sharing your knowledge.

im off to find a new gauge and 1/4 ball valve

put the new oil pressure gauge & a new sending unit on.

Question: why does my back oil pressure gauge read 12psi higher than the dash?

The differences in gauge accuracy. Please don’t ask which one is correct.

Pretty sure I removed my rear gauge and installed a pipe plug.

From my days long ago in big boats, the mechanical gauges in the engine room were the ones I trusted…

The difference could be the result of pressure loss due to the lengths between the pressure source (engine) and the gauge location. That would easily be a difference of 40+ feet. Each bend of the oil pressure lines will create a drop in pressure readings. My gauge in the engine compartment suffers from being mineral oil filled, to reduce needle movements from vibration, with the fluid leaking from the cracked glass face.
