  • Fueling in Hot Weather – Expansion

Posted by John on May 6, 2018 at 7:47 pm

Well it has finally cracked 100F here in the desert. In checking the bus, I noticed that both fuel caps are non vented ( 1998 XL). When the tank is full and the temperature increases there is an increase in pressure in the fuel system. Does this pressure release through a vent that allows fuel to exit the tank? The coach was originally licensed in California if that makes any difference.

Watching. I topped off (let the handle shut off, put it back on the pump) yesterday about 30 miles from home. Coach will sit until Friday when we leave on another trip. We don’t have a forecast of temps in the 100’s … but I’m concerned about expansion of 208 gallons of Love’s finest. I’m sure the fuel in the underground tanks was 52 degrees or even possibly less.

Any expansion will be relieved through the vent.

Does the vent allow fuel to spill on the top of the tank or is it directed to underneath the coach?

I know from recent experience that an overfill will spill out of the vent all over the top of the tank. From there it drips down the side of the tank and collects in a puddle on the ground.

I have never over-filled the diesel tank where it came out a vent or an over-flow. It did come out the filler spout once when I selected the slow point on the filler hose and it didn’t cut itself off.

On the DEF tank, I did over-fill it once and it came out an over-flow hose at the bottom of the coach. I didn’t realize what it was so I took a sip and it tasted funny (jus kid’n). I’m more careful now of not overfilling that tank.

    Safe travels,

    Mark
