  • I needa KVH R5 Satellite Dome

Posted by Rick on April 26, 2014 at 4:11 pm

My KVH Satellite dome had an arm wrestling match with a tree branch and lost. New ones aren’t available so my only alternative is a used one. Someone out there who converted to the new High Def dish must have one of these obsolete big ole plastic R5 domes sitting on the garage floor or maybe you planted flowers in it. Any help would be appreciated, I’ll take any criticism from anyone about not being able to navigate around the low branch except from Truk.

Tangeled with a tree! That means you were in the squeezins and moving the bus and Wendy was nowhere around to keep your sorry butt from doing bus damage! Just sell another Boobaroo and update to the new stuff. I gave you enough jingle at Pelican to buy a load of Sat Dishes….

Anyway I can help, just let me know.:)

Apparently I am going to need to upgrade mine too. As has been mentioned on here before, the Tracvision LM is apparently a paperweight these days. So I’ll jump in behind Rick hoping to find someone who has upgraded and has their old dome. I don’t know that I need a specific brand or anything. Just something that works… Thanks.

Rick, I think it would be a lot easier to just upgrade to a HD and that way you have to expain your little mishaps.

This dome is tall. All the car applications aren’t close. The R5 is tall and was used for a while. Most everyone has upgraded to Hi Def and all the new sat dishes are smaller. The problem is everything works so well and I’m not crazy about changing over all the TV’s since Crestron has control of all of my audio and video and my wallet.

If it were me (and it’s not!) I would not replace it with a dome at all even if you don’t want to do HD today. I would install and antenna like the Winegard Trav’ler so you could get the most use out of your satellite TV (no rain fade, etc.) today and already have the necessary antenna in place when you do update your TV’s.

The money is only slightly more than a dome (new) would cost but you have an antenna that performs better and is future compatible. If you like in-motion, you can always attach that antenna to a DVR and just watch the recorded programming while driving. This also gets rid of all the dropouts you encounter every time you go past a tree, light pole or under a bridge.

Again, not me, not my coach, just thinking out loud.
